Considered are the history and the modern state of ecological classifications of plant species — those physiognomical (marking out of life forms, growth forms, and functional types of plants) and ecological (marking out of ecological groups) ones. The first approach turned up in the beginning of XIX century, the second — in the middle of XX century. At the base of modern ecological classifications development lies the pragmatic approach directed to advancement of their efficiency when using them in geobotanic practice.
